When everything feels uncertain, knowing where to begin can make all the difference

When a relationship starts to break down, it can feel overwhelming.

You may be facing decisions you never expected, with questions about your future, finances and family all competing for attention.

Drawing on decades of experience, we explain your options clearly so you can make sense of it and move forward with confidence.

As a consultancy, Divorce Solutions offers an alternative to traditional legal routes. Our role is to reduce conflict and help you make informed decisions.

We will stop you from making expensive mistakes

In the early stages of separation, it’s easy to take steps that feel right at the time but have lasting consequences.

You may be wondering what you are entitled to, how long things will take, or whether you can afford to separate. You might be unsure if you need a lawyer, whether mediation is suitable, or if matters can be resolved without going to court. These are questions we deal with every day.

We help you step back and see the bigger picture. Whether you are considering reconciliation, arrangements for your children, or how to approach a financial settlement, we provide clear, independent guidance.

Clear guidance, whatever path you take

There is no single route through divorce. Some couples reach an agreement themselves. Others use mediation or collaborative approaches. In some cases, court is necessary.

We help you understand your options and choose the right path – practically and financially. We can also help you control costs and avoid unnecessary legal fees.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Reaching agreement across the kitchen table is often the best outcome, but most people need some support – particularly when it comes to agreeing the financial settlement.

There are a number of different processes available. Our book outlines as many as 10, with mediation being the best known and most widely used.

  • In simple terms, the divorce process – the part that formally ends the marriage – takes a minimum of 20 weeks to reach the conditional order (previously known as the decree nisi).

After that, it takes a further six weeks and one day to reach the final order (previously the decree absolute).

In this period, it is hoped that the parties will have agreed the financial settlement and any children issues, but that doesn't always happen. Timing depends on how reasonable the parties are prepared to be.

  • It is difficult to give a precise figure, as costs depend on how easily an agreement can be reached and which process is used.

Mediation is often the quickest and most cost-effective option, as it usually avoids the need for ongoing involvement from solicitors. Some people reach agreement within three or four sessions, while others may need up to ten.

As a guide, mediation typically costs between £1,500 and £5,000. Other processes are likely to be significantly more expensive.

  • No two situations are the same, so outcomes vary depending on the details of each case.

A free initial conversation is the best starting point, allowing us to understand your situation and advise on the next steps.

  • Arrangements for children are usually best agreed between parents, without the need for court involvement. Unlike financial matters, the courts expect parents to work together to reach decisions, and will only step in as a last resort.

If support is needed, mediation can help guide those conversations. Some families also benefit from working with a specialist, such as a co-parenting expert or family therapist, to find an approach that works for everyone involved.

  • We are all experienced family lawyers. In this role, however, we act as consultants – guiding you through the legal and practical aspects of separation and divorce.

Our focus is on helping you make informed decisions and avoid unnecessary costs, rather than progressing matters through a traditional legal process.
